People often ask me what I do when I'm not running for Congress. I'm the owner of a small business that creates and maintains educational websites.
My most popular website is HamTestOnline, which teaches people what they need to know to pass a ham radio exam.
The younger people will now ask, "What's ham radio?" Remember that weird old guy down the block with all the antennas in his backyard, always talking on the radio to people in distant lands? That's ham radio.
Next, people ask me, "Is that still around?" Well, about 3,000 people still get a ham radio license in the U.S. each month. There's something magic about talking to far away people by bouncing radio waves off of the ionosphere. There's nothing like breaking a pileup and working an almost unreadable distant DX station.
It's also nice to know you have the skills and equipment to set up and operate an emergency communications center after a disaster like Katrina wipes out the normal communications infrastructure. Hams are often the only ones able to communicate in the wake of major disasters. It's what we do.
The educational website business is a natural fit for me, as one of my life mottos is, "Any day you don't learn something new is a wasted day."
